Adapting to climate change is rapidly emerging as one of the key development, environmental and security challenges of our time. The consequences of climate change – more frequent and intense heatwaves, droughts, floods, storms and changes in water regimes – are no longer a distant prediction, but a reality that is already affecting quality of life, human health, economic activity and the resilience of natural and urban systems. Adaptation is therefore no longer merely a supplementary policy area, but a fundamental pillar of sustainable development and resilience.
How can regions better prepare for the growing impacts of climate change? Which funding models can support the effective implementation of adaptation measures? And how can cooperation between local, regional, national and European actors accelerate climate resilience?
The 2026 International Climate Conference brings together policymakers, researchers, development agencies, local authorities, businesses and civil society organisations from Slovenia and across Europe to discuss practical pathways towards climate resilience.
The aim of the conference is to establish a professional networking platform dedicated to the exchange of knowledge, experience and best practice in the field of climate change adaptation. Its purpose is to deepen understanding of climate risks and accelerate the transition from strategic commitments to effective implementation at national, regional and local levels. Particular emphasis will be placed on integrating scientific findings, public policies and practical solutions.
Heat | not just unpleasant, it’s a health risk. Heatwaves are becoming increasingly frequent and intense. Heat affects health, productivity and quality of life, particularly in cities. Shade, trees, cooler public spaces and adapted buildings are therefore an important part of climate resilience.
Water | it is best to keep it where it falls. The same measure can help during droughts and floods. Retaining water in the soil, wetlands, floodplains, and the landscape reduces rapid runoff during heavy rainfall, whilst at the same time conserving more water for periods without rainfall. This is particularly important for agricultural and riverine landscapes.
Trees | our climate infrastructure. Green and blue spaces are not merely an aesthetic feature. Trees, parks, green roofs, water bodies and nature-based watercourses help to cool cities, retain rainwater and mitigate the effects of extreme weather events, whilst also improving quality of life and supporting biodiversity.
Fields | where climate resilience also begins. Extreme weather events significantly impact crop yields and quality. In agriculture, adaptation is based on the introduction of more resilient varieties, improved soil and water management, agroforestry and greater landscape diversity. This is a challenge that links many regions across Europe.
